Second October Post

Tomorrow is my first day visiting RISSE this school year, and overall I feel really prepared to go in and start on my work! First and foremost, I need to make sure the subjects I had in mind for this project last year are still there and possibly scout out others to make sure I'm getting enough of them, since I really want to collect a variety of experiences. When I feel confident in the subjects I've chosen, I will talk to them about the project and give them consent forms to bring to their parents. I'm also planning on talking to the Rifat, the director, in person about my project; she and I have been in touch over email, and there are a couple things she wants to make sure we're on the same page about before I start my project.

Because I am distributing consent forms and talking to Rifat, I won't be able to start interviewing right away tomorrow, but I know it will be a valuable visit in terms of determining subjects and beginning to get comfortable with them again after a couple months of being away! I'm really excited to reconnect with kids from last year and to meet new ones, and I'm also looking forward to talking with Rifat; last year I came to RISSE as a volunteer, and this year, while I'm still definitely committed to helping out at the center, I'm looking forward to shifting my role to journalist, as well. Looking forward to being able to update throughout November on my weekly visits!

    Thanks for your October updates! I like how you describe your planned activities, and I think you have useful ideas for moving forward. I am sure that you will get good information to work with. I am eager to see what directions they will lead to!

Second April Post

At this point in the project, I’m almost done with the article I’ve been working on all month. It’s an unusual little piece, especially at this stage when it’s mostly written but not necessarily organized yet. To clarify: what I’ve been writing about RISSE has flowed out in bits, little mini ideas that either stand alone or connect to another mini idea through a shared subject. They are technically discrete snapshots (I wouldn’t even say they’re stories, necessarily) but my hope is that they each contribute a verse to the poem I’m trying to compose about this after school center. There’s a certain amount of restraint that is involved in this writing process, too, because I am really dedicated to a couple things with this project: one, acknowledging myself in the context of the center and the things I write about it, and two, painting these kids and this place with as light a brush as possible. Second January Post

Yesterday I went up to Middlebury College to sit in on a class taught by Sierra, the journalist I met at Emma in November. The class is called “Writing What You Don’t Know: Craft and Ethics in Narrative Journalism.” In it, students write two long form journalistic pieces, read and discuss magazine journalism, and learn about the ethics of journalism while grappling with it in their own projects. In the class I sat in on, the students started off in three-person consultancy groups in which they discussed an ethical problem each student was having regarding the article they were working on. Each person in the group had a certain amount of time to explain the problem, and then the other two members had time to ask questions and discuss a possible solution—inasmuch as a concrete solution to an ethical problem in journalism is realistic! Second February Post

On February 22, I went to a talk that Rex Smith, the editor of The Times Union newspaper in Albany, was giving at Emma Willard. He talked about journalists’ imperative to tell the truth as well as they can, to strive for objectivity, and to wrestle with questions of ethics, among other things. Before stopping for questions, he added that another role of journalism that he sees as being as important as the delivery of facts is the revelation of lives and situations that most people don’t relate to. He described this kind of horizon-broadening journalism as serving to expose to readers more of the human condition, allowing them to see something of someone else’s experience and to therefore access more of their own humanity.
